As the Northern Hemisphere goes into their Summer Solstice…We, here, in the South…Are heading into our Winter Solstice.
The winter solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice, also known as midwinter, occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere.
Yule: The ancient Norsemen of Scandinavia celebrated Yule from the winter solstice through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which became known as Yule logs. They would set one end of these logs on fire. Ancient Cultures viewed the Winter Solstice as a time of death and rebirth.
Some traditions hold that dark spirits walk the Earth on the Winter Solstice…So watch out tonight!
- Start making the candles.
- Look into labels for candles.
- Create something…That is something which I cannot tell you about yet, until it’s all set up…Watch this space for more…
- Go for my drivers licence…At least my “L’s”
- Go through my pants again and get rid of ones that don’t fit and aren’t not suitable/warm enough for Winter.
I find that the problem with Winter is that I don’t actually set up many goals for myself, because I am not a Winter person. My goals are mainly to stay inside for as long as humanely possibly to be honest. Which is why you’ll probably find a lot of my goals for the next couple of months, will be things I can do indoors most of the time.
Australia is now heading more and more into Winter…Never fear though! Now it’s time to crack out those Winter Time Favourites!
I have a weakness for beanies. I used to really like ear muffs, but for some really weird reason, they make me feel off balanced.
Do you have any favourite Winter clothing, or accessory?
I have a favourite REALLY bad comfort food Winter dish, that I just love and I probably wont eat this Winter, because my cholesterol will go out the roof!…It’s two minute chicken noodles AND mac ‘n’ cheese.
Do you have a favourite Winter food?
There is nothing better than, well I think, a nice hot cup of tea on a cold Winters night. I can’t really drink coffee anymore, it heightens my anxiety. I hate drinking anything cold, but sometimes I get sick of drinking just tea. I also love hot chocolate or cocoa with marshmallows. I’m very much a kid at still really, lol.
What are some of your favourite Winter Drinks?
Of course above all my favourite activity is reading and writing. However this year I am (if you’ve been a regular reader of mine) I am planning on starting to make my own Candles. Who knows? Maybe this will become my favourite Winter activity! Maybe I’ll do this for Winter and Autumn, something else for Summer and Spring? Let’s see!
Do you have any specific Winter activities?
(How freaking adorable!)
What did you or did not like about the first place you lived without your parents?
WELL…lol…The mistake I made was moving with a few friends whose one parents owned the house. Which meant they could do anything they wanted, and we could not. We also paid our rent on time (we paid our money directly to our ‘friends’parents, not through a landlord…BIG MISTAKE!) and yet the amount of times we had the water cut off was ridiculous! The thing that made us even angrier, I was the last person to move in. Instead of the rent being less for everyone, I had to pay the exact amount of money, and they had to keep paying the same amount of money…So they were getting MORE money and yet the water STILL kept being cut off. No one lives there anymore, lol.
Oh! Oh! Even if you were in a couple, we EACH had to pay $400 a month. So you couldn’t divide it between you. We had 6 people living there one time and we ALL paying $400 and still the water was getting cut off.
What is your most favorite smell/scent?
I have these black candles “Madison French – Moonlight Mist” They smell beautiful…I haven’t even burnt them yet! I buy some every time they have them, but they have them so few times, that I don’t want to burn them. I only have about 5 or 6 and I haven’t seen any of them for over year now.
Would you prefer snowy winters, or not, and why?
I have never even seen a snow in Winter…I come from “Down Under”. So we don’t really get snow in Winter, up in the mountains in Victoria I believe they do…Not really anywhere else. So I cannot honestly answer, I’d probably enjoy a snowy day for that…a day, lol…I am no good with cold.
What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.
49. Things you like about Winter
Even though it’s Summer here, it still actually feels like Winter is here still. It was literally reported on the news that over the pass week, at the start of the week. That there was going to be 3 months of rain in three days and it has most have definitely felt like it!
I am also not really a big “Winter” person, I tend to get very miserable and not being able to just head out when I want too can be frustrating (but this can also happen in Summer, just with a little heat). I find it can also be easier to cool down, then to warm up. Nothing to seems to ache in Spring/Summer either.
However, there are a few things that I do enjoy about Winter:
- Having a hot drink, especially on a cold, rainy night. I like to just hold it in my hands.
- It’s more of an excuse for cuddling!
- Those long hot showers and baths.
- I look good in a coat!
- Wrap yourself up in bed with a good book!

What is your favorite cheese?
I LOVE Jarlsberg cheese (the yummy cheese with the holes in it). You can even buy it in slices and I do and I love it on my sandwiches.
Are you left or right handed?
I am left handed…I know, I know…Devil child,lol
Do you prefer exercising your mind or your body? How frequently do you do either?
I probably exercise my mind more than my body, but I definitely need to start exercising my body a lot more than I have been. I went to run for a bus, but I felt so stiff running for it and I as I was running for it, I realised I couldn’t even remember the last time that I ran…For anything, lol
Complete this sentence: Hot days are …
a long time coming! We are currently in the middle of Winter here and I am completely missing Summer!
I don’t know if it was the Winter Solstice, but it’s felt like a long week. Although the Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year. Thank God it’s Friday!
The above picture is of a Quokka (Wikipedia), probably the happiest animal on the planet!
I was very interested to find out that today, in my state, is the date of June Solstice (the 21st) early in the morning.
What is the June Solstice, I hear you ask? Well I shall tell you.
The June or Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is the shortest day of the year, while in the Northern hemisphere it is considered to be the longest day of the year. Now by “longest” and “shortest” I mean the amount of daylight during that one day. The June solstice is the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Usually it happens anywhere between the 20th and the 22nd, depending on your time zone.
You can look up your local time for the Winter or Summer Solstice via this link.
