Banning the Ban!

Is there anything more Magical than a Quokka?!

Would you look at that puddum?

I am on Instagram and Instagram is becoming more and more animal wildlife exploitation aware…and it’s fantastic!

Popular quokka selfie hashtag could be banned by instagram

The #quokkaselfie prompts an “Instagram Alert” that comes along with Instagram accounts that are suspected and confirmed of animal exploitation. (Think BJWT)

The quokka, the tiny marsupial native to a handful of islands off Western Australia – including WA Tourism jewel in the crown Rottnest Island.

This mean that Instagram believes that the photos you are viewing could be apart of wildlife exploitation…Now there are some “companies” who do do this (look up BJWT Corruption) and the warning comes up for the BJWT pages on Instagram, because they DO exploit animals…

However…

A spokesperson for the Rottnest Island Authority told The West Australian that the warning was “unhelpful”.

“The Instagram block notice … does not serve to educate or inform the public about our conservation efforts or direct people to how they might develop a better understanding of this native species,” he said.

“The RIA takes seriously its responsibility to protect the quokka population on the island and there are significant penalties for people who interfere with native flora and fauna.”

Quokka’s are well known for being extremely friendly and not being generally frightened of human beings. Which means there are a LOT of #quokkaselfie and they look like they are grinning…

So what do you all think? What is wildlife exploitation for you?

Evolution

The extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger is one of the more shameful part of Australia/Tasmania’s History.

3D Scanning

Basically over the years, people have asked Museums to dissect the last remaining Tasmania Tiger that had a cub in it’s pouch, and the Museum have refused…That’s right the Tasmania Tiger is a marsupial…Instead of dissecting it, they have now found a way to 3D and scan image the Tiger instead!

Second to last show! Get on it!

The Great Circle of Life

So I’ve been thinking a lot over the weekend and sometimes that 140 characters on Twitter just cannot express how your feeling…Without posting about 20,000 tweets…Which is a little annoying for others…And no chance for editing either!

Over the weekend on the live safari that I watch regularly…(Seriously, check it out). There was a great tragedy that started a huge debate. I thought about what everyone was saying and what I’ve learnt while watching and I just wanted to express how I felt about the situation…That involves more than 140 characters.

The situation involved some of Djuma’s highly endangered Wild Dogs and one of the safari’s more well known Prides the Styx Pride. Usually Wild Dogs are pretty good at getting out of the way of a Lioness/Lion. Wild Dogs have huge ears designed for listening, but unfortunately and by some sad situation, they just didn’t hear the Lioness, and she came out of nowhere to kill one of the younger Wild Dogs. Too lose even one Wild Dog is horrible because they are just so highly endangered. At the same time though I don’t blame or hate the Lioness for killing the Dog, especially with her own cubs being so close by, which if the Dogs are had found, would have torn them apart.  The Lioness also does not know that the Dogs are so critically endangered.

It started a huge debate on what type of animal is “better”. The wildlife is not Disney, even in the Lion King, Mufasa doesn’t say anything about NOT eating the antelope. Just all the “Great circle of Life”… stuff … The best thing I have discovered since watching Safari Live was love for all creatures, the herbivores, the predators, even some of the bugs and insects…Have you ever seen a Dung Beetle, did you know how much they can lift?!

dung-beetle

Yes I still have my old and tried favourites, but now I just have so many more!

  • I have a huge amount of respect for Buffalo,
  • Warthogs make for fierce mothers,
  • Egyptian Geese duckling are just the cutest,
  • Jackals are the most nervous creatures I have ever seen and
  • The hearts of the elephants…Just stunning!

What I’m saying, I hate it when we all fight on the safari live channel, it really unsettles me. People like different animals, and predators having to kill another predator when their own cubs are nearby, it just really is nature. We can’t all like the exact same animals, because, well it just can’t happen…I think we can all agree though, Maggots are just icky.

This post is also a excuse to post this classic video…Enjoy!

Well for my American friends anyway. I can’t recommend watching this enough! I’ll still be able to watch via Ustream and YouTube…But the Americans will be able to watch it n tv. (I’ll probably write a post on January 1st again).

New Year = New Life!

I hope that you all had a great New Year and however you celebrated it I hope that it was fun, it was exactly what you wanted, it was safe and that you don’t have too much of a sore head.

Bringing in the New Year I thought that I would share with you a few photos of the new life at Wild Earth Safari – Ustream (which we all know how obsessed I am with that live stream!)

World Lion Day

I am sure most of you have heard of Cecil the Lion and the very sad story that has followed since. I clearly care about more animals and people than just “Cecil the Lion”, but if I were to post about everything I am passionate about, my news-feed postings would never end!lol…With animals (for me personally) they cannot speak for themselves, for example today, a white Rhino died the same week as Cecil…leaving 4 known left in the world, forever…We caused that, we owe these animals…So thanks for those supporting me and not making me feel bad about speaking up, cause apparently there are a lot of people who are upset people caring so much about “just a Lion”…I kind of want my children and my grandchildren to be able to see wild animals running around free…That’s just me though…I’m hoping that this tragedy will bring some good, especially for conservation!

The Australian Senate: Keep the ban on lion trophies and body parts

There was a poem written by this 13 year old boy whose wishes to remain anonymous, and for me personally, it speaks exactly to how I feel and what I think about the situation.

I am Cecil.

Naturally I am powerful.
Yet the situation was such that I am not longer alive.
Alive to hunt, alive to live, alive to be African.
I am not Cecil. But I am Africa, An Africa for you to kill, obviously.

I am every rhino and elephant that you tear apart.
I am the Ivory ripped from their faces, for you to consume.
I am rhino and elephant. I am Cecil, I am Africa.

I am sorry that we can’t defend the defenseless against people with weapons used to attack.
I am sorry that we can’t bring Cecil back.
You’ve killed Cecil.
You’re killing Africa.

I am not Cecil.
I am Africa.

Baby animal magic!

I have been trying to find that quote about not working with animals and children, but all I could find were quotes was about how much people love working with animals and children. While I suspected this may be because of our more “PG acceptable” society…We all know that saying.

I would have to say that over this weekend though, animals are probably not always easy to work with. As many of you will know I took this weekend off as this weekend I was planning on watching the newest members of the Dash family to be born. Over the last few years, once a year, the Dash family has been hatching and raising a small number of baby Ostriches.

It was a very slow weekend, the first Ostrich that showed any sign of “pipping” was Gunga and he/she pretty much spent the whole weekend not hatching out the egg and of course I have to go to work today.

What’s the bet that everything happens today? So one down and three to go!

Am I wrong?

*start rant here =P*
If you are an avid reader of mine you’ll know that I watch this live web feed Wild Earth Live Safari. Any-ways, on their Facebook page (one of them anyways) they’ve decided that people are not allowed to post anything about poaching or hunting? It’s a wildlife page on conservation land that has a wide range of animals that are heavily endangered, and they don’t want posts about poaching and hunting because it’s not “nice”?

Seriously!

People are all for it too, except for me…I’ve created a little bit of a ho ah…Aww the poor little human beings are all put out by the articles saying that they animals they claim to love so much are being tracked, hunted, beheaded. We’re watching these animals for free, and you don’t want post some articles because its “not nice”. I think it’s the LEAST we can do for these animals! Get the articles out there.

Make the people aware of how bad it is out there!

I cannot turn my back on these animals as we are lucky enough to watch these drives for free, educating us, teaching us and not only do the animals ask us for nothing, we are the only ones who can speak up for the animals. If a group of people who understand and see these amazing creatures in their family groups and their every day habit…Turn our back and not talk about the realities, because it’s not “nice”…My heart is literally broken.

This video is of a young Matimba male called “Junior”. Junior is a young male and will be forced by his Dad and Uncle to leave the pride soon, he’s just getting to old to hang around anymore. Junior does not have any brothers to leave with and their does not seem to be a young male coalition around that he might be able to join. Junior will more than likely have to survive on his own and far away from the safety of the conservation. Into the path of poachers and hunters…How can anyone look at him and go and pretend that this isn’t happening. Why would anyone want to do nothing and not stand up and say “No! We wont allow this to keep happening!”
