It’s the Kings day today!

Well, in Australia it is.

Annually, August the 10th is World Lion Day.

I’ll list a couple of facts, but the King of the…Jungle?

  • A lioness group is called a pride.
  • A group of male lions is called a coalition.
  • While Lionesses do most of the hunting, male lions will help with a kill when they are nearby.
  •  Both males and females have a very powerful roar that can be heard up to 8 km (5 mi.) away.
  • The more voluminous the mane, the greater the appeal of the male.

*Maybe he’s born with it*

  • African lions are considered vulnerable of extinction by the IUCN Red List
  •  Distemper is spread to lions by neighbouring village dogs as well as hyenas.
  • Since Mufasa and Scar were brothers and there is not mention of another male lion, or Scar being Nala’s Uncle…Nala and Simba are, at the very least, cousins. If not half brother and sister. In reality “Simba” would never taken over, he would have been eventually chased off.

  • Lions don’t tend to live in Jungles, they can be found in Africa south of the Sahara and in Northwest India.
  • African Lions are called…well African Lions and Indian Lions are called Asiatic Lions.

Endangered Species Day

Probably not the best way to start the “weekend” off…but today is Endangered Species Day.

It’s my own personal view that people underestimate how many endangered animals they are and the how fast they rapidly disappearing. I know that my article posted below that says “US”, but it is an epidemic around the world. With so many things happening, sometimes it may be easy to forget or to just plain not care. Apparently Australia, for some reason, have the worst reputation for not protecting their animals. Which just breaks my heart.

U.S. Americans greatly underestimate how many animals on the Endangered species list, study shows:

On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to proclaim 3 March, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day, which proposed by Thailand,[1] to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. – http://www.wikipedia.org

Evolution

The extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger is one of the more shameful part of Australia/Tasmania’s History.

3D Scanning

Basically over the years, people have asked Museums to dissect the last remaining Tasmania Tiger that had a cub in it’s pouch, and the Museum have refused…That’s right the Tasmania Tiger is a marsupial…Instead of dissecting it, they have now found a way to 3D and scan image the Tiger instead!

Second to last show! Get on it!

Just a little reminder that this is the second to last show for Wild Earth’s #safarilive show on Nat Geo Wild…Just on the television if you live in America…It should be on right now…Come and join us!

The Great Circle of Life

So I’ve been thinking a lot over the weekend and sometimes that 140 characters on Twitter just cannot express how your feeling…Without posting about 20,000 tweets…Which is a little annoying for others…And no chance for editing either!

Over the weekend on the live safari that I watch regularly…(Seriously, check it out). There was a great tragedy that started a huge debate. I thought about what everyone was saying and what I’ve learnt while watching and I just wanted to express how I felt about the situation…That involves more than 140 characters.

The situation involved some of Djuma’s highly endangered Wild Dogs and one of the safari’s more well known Prides the Styx Pride. Usually Wild Dogs are pretty good at getting out of the way of a Lioness/Lion. Wild Dogs have huge ears designed for listening, but unfortunately and by some sad situation, they just didn’t hear the Lioness, and she came out of nowhere to kill one of the younger Wild Dogs. Too lose even one Wild Dog is horrible because they are just so highly endangered. At the same time though I don’t blame or hate the Lioness for killing the Dog, especially with her own cubs being so close by, which if the Dogs are had found, would have torn them apart.  The Lioness also does not know that the Dogs are so critically endangered.

It started a huge debate on what type of animal is “better”. The wildlife is not Disney, even in the Lion King, Mufasa doesn’t say anything about NOT eating the antelope. Just all the “Great circle of Life”… stuff … The best thing I have discovered since watching Safari Live was love for all creatures, the herbivores, the predators, even some of the bugs and insects…Have you ever seen a Dung Beetle, did you know how much they can lift?!

dung-beetle

Yes I still have my old and tried favourites, but now I just have so many more!

  • I have a huge amount of respect for Buffalo,
  • Warthogs make for fierce mothers,
  • Egyptian Geese duckling are just the cutest,
  • Jackals are the most nervous creatures I have ever seen and
  • The hearts of the elephants…Just stunning!

What I’m saying, I hate it when we all fight on the safari live channel, it really unsettles me. People like different animals, and predators having to kill another predator when their own cubs are nearby, it just really is nature. We can’t all like the exact same animals, because, well it just can’t happen…I think we can all agree though, Maggots are just icky.

This post is also a excuse to post this classic video…Enjoy!

A special New Years message

I have made this entirely different New Years Blog just to express my thanks and gratitude for an entirely different group of people. We’ve gone through a lot together, from difficult technical issues to illnesses, to the death of beloved and favourite animals.

Most of us have never even actually met before, yet we feel loss without one another when one of us hasn’t been around for a while. I would definitely consider all of you to be my friend and good friends at that. Some of you are better friends to me than my friends that I see.

You have all brought so much happiness to my life and gotten me through some really rough days. I don’t know what I would have done with the awesomeness that you have brought to my life.

I raise my glass to you! I’m not sure you know what you’ve done for me, the happy you’ve brought into my life ❤

Safari Live come to a television near you!…Well in the US of A

January 1st my American friends will be able to watch the Safari Live right own their own television via Nat Geo Wild. Looks like 2017 is starting off on a great note! Well for my American friends anyway. I can’t recommend watching this enough! I’ll still be able to watch via Ustream and YouTube…But the Americans will be able to watch it n tv. (I’ll probably write a post on January 1st again).

Quokka

In case you hadn’t guessed already I come from a “Land Down Under”…Best Country in the world =P lol…Anyways I came across this article over the weekend and it filled me with joy.

http://themindcircle.com/quokka-selfie-is-cutest-trend-in-australia-right-now/?utm_content=bufferf91ac&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer%20

The Quokka has been the happiest animal on earth, as you can see from the pictures, you can probably see why. As one article quoted:

Meet the Quokka, a marsupial that seems to have come straight from an animator at Disney, but is actually native to a small corner of southwestern Australia.

Source: Meet The Quokka, The Happiest Animal In The World (PHOTOS) (Huffington Post)

Quokkas are usually very friendly animals as you can tell by the pictures, and pose no threat to humans whatsoever. However, these sweet little creatures, as you can imagine, because they are so placid and docileb. Their numbers were greatly reduced when Foxes and Cats were introduced to Australia. They are currently listed as “Vulnerable”. The good news though due to conservation and fox control programs, the numbers are starting to increase again.

I would normally not enjoy the selfies with a wild animals, but they don’t seemed stressed out. The other reason I don’t object to it, is mainly because it’s not the same as those “Lion/Tiger” photos. Were you take a photo with one and then they get killed afterwards? You know those ones?

Most of these photos are done in conservation parks. If I felt it was wrong, I definitely wouldn’t be “advertising” it, so to speak.

Baby explosion!

So another quick #safarilive update and it is a really happy one…There has been an explosion of baby animals, mainly in the predator area.

We’ll start with the Queen of Djuma herself, Karula.

KarulaCharlotteKarulaCubTreeIntroducing to you Princess Charlotte (pic with her mum) and Prince George. Karula is probably one of the best mothers that there are out there. She has successfully raised all her litters, except for one and that was not her fault. The death of that particular cub brought in a new rule that no more than three cars can be in at one sighting of baby animals. If they are really new, there are to be NO cars what-so-ever.

NkCub1NkCubs

The next to talk about the Nkuhuma lions! They’ve recently had three, roughly a month or two old, but the even cuter find was yesterday on the sunrise drive! Look at the gif below!

However the most exciting news is about the Styx Pride…Now we haven’t seen the Styx pride on the Safari Live drives. We have seen videos and pictures of the new little bundles. The Styx pride has probably been hit the hardest of all the prides in the area. They lost all of their cubs born last year, including a sub-adult female. Two lionesses…So it’s so good to hear that not only have the Styx have had cubs…They haven’t had just one or two…They have had…8…8 CUBS! 8 cubs how wonderful is that!

Hail to the new Royal Cubs of #safarilive!

A few weeks ago I posted about #safarilive’s Queen of Djuma Karula!

https://lolsyslibrary.wordpress.com/2016/02/05/queen-karula/?preview_id=3091&preview_nonce=45430b73ce&post_format=standard&preview=true%20

Well over the weekend, after much rumor of her having lost the cub, then finding out she had twins and they were doing well. We finally got a quick glimpse of them over the weekend!

KarulaCub1They are so tiny! We only got a quick glimpse of them as they run away into thicker bush when Queen Mama Karula came to scoop them up. Our guide, Brent could hear them playing about, but could not go in any further.

KarulaCub   We cannot tell at the moment if, other than we know they are twins, if we two princes, princesses or one of both.
