2016 … The year to be offended? Or not offended enough?

This post was inspired by something I was kind of involved with over the weekend. Mainly seeing the same saying coming up “2016…The Year to be offended by everything” People who were saying this were inspired by this post I found on Facebook.

It’s probably a phrase that most people are familiar with. Now what was cracking me up was all the comments *mental note: Stop reading the comments*…I was literally laughing through the comments, they run through from everything racism to how humans are superior to animals, to heated debate if Nala is a Queen or a Princess.

I know there are issues out there that are completely serious and people should “educate themselves” about *another phrase from 2016*. However, sometimes I think getting upset over topics like these, my comment “You all don’t know how to Disney”, detract from actual important issues. It just doesn’t seem to me to be proactive. Some things, to me, just need to stay fun. You need to have fun and good times, so you have the strength to fight for what matters. You can’t fight all the time, it takes too much out of you.

Plus, Nala was totally a Princess…Did you see any other male Lions around other than Scar? If you say Scar could be her father, we totally cannot be friends! =P

Labor Day

Today is South Australia’s Labor Day, so what better way to celebrate it then do absolutely nothing at all!

nothingatall

For those who don’t know what a Labour Day (I honestly forget every single year that we even have one, I keep thinking that it’s strictly an American thing). Labour Day is where a lot of Government industries will shut down for the day, to celebrate and recognise the hard work they’ve been putting in all year. Now in South Australia a lot of our Industries shut down on this day, retail, etc included. In America this seems to be more up to that particular company.

It is observed in Western Australia on the first Monday in March and on the second Monday in March in Victoria and Tasmania. The Northern Territory observes Labour Day on the first Monday in May. It is held on the first Monday of October in Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, and South Australia. Until 2012, Queensland observed Labour Day on the first Monday in May.

We have had Labour Day in Australia for just over a Century, in the 1800’s people were  typically working 6 days a week, and were working 12 hour days. On April 21, 1856, stonemasons at the University of Melbourne marched to Parliament House and pushed for an eight-hour working day. An agreement with employers for a 48-hour week was eventually reached and the workers welcomed the new eight-hour day.

So what do you readers when you have an unexpected day off?

June Solstice

I was very interested to find out that today, in my state, is the date of June Solstice (the 21st) early in the morning.

What is the June Solstice, I hear you ask? Well I shall tell you.

The June or Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is the shortest day of the year, while in the Northern hemisphere it is considered to be the longest day of the year. Now by “longest” and “shortest” I mean the amount of daylight during that one day. The June solstice is the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Usually it happens anywhere between the 20th and the 22nd, depending on your time zone.

You can look up your local time for the Winter or Summer Solstice via this link.

If you were on a debate team, what general subject would you relish debating?

Something to do with popular culture I think, I am one of those people who doesn’t believe in myself enough to know what I know…If that makes sense, lol

What’s your strongest sense?

Listening, definitely listening. Even when it’s not a topic that I’m interested in. Everyone is always going on about how I’m a great listener. Hey, I try my best. I don’t think that we listen enough these days. I don’t mean either, actually listening with our ears, but listening to what people are NOT saying as well.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Oh this is a good one! I actually really had to think about this one…Oh I know! It’s a quote my Gran wrote about me “A rare as the Unicorn, is the Maiden of fair spirit”.

First Day of School!

So today would have been the first week of a new school/TAFE year for me, but for the whole month of February I am working full-time, so I can’t join my class mates right now.

I LOVE to study, I think even if I was to work all the time, there would still be something that I would want to learn about. I sometimes wonder if that’s part of the reason I like being a Librarian because Libraries have so many different items, book – fiction and non-fiction, audio books…Every-time I go into my volunteer work there is always a new author or topic I learn about.

Those who are heading back to school this week, I wish you a year of learning, studying and having your mind grow and expand.
