If you don’t like Rats, stop…
Anyone who keeps rats as pets or companions is already in on the secret: these animals are friendly, loyal, intelligent, and very endearing. Unfortunately they’ve had a bit of bad press over the years, what with the Black Death, Bubonic Plague and a thousand Pacific islands which have had their native wildlife chewed down to ground level and beyond. What’s a few environmental and social catastrophes between friends?
Pet Rats though are the cutest little things and make for some great first time pets! I have had 3 pet rats over my life time. My mum used to breed them!
Rats have gotten such a bad wrap over the years.
They have been blamed for a lot of death and destruction.
The date of April 4th was selected to be World Rat Day because this is the only certain date associated with the beginning of the ratlist (under the current ownership of James Kittock and Robyn Arthur).
I personally think rats are really cute and they are pretty tiny. They make for excellent first time pets, not for very little children, but probably just before adolescent. If you are thinking about “buying” a rat (I don’t know if you can adopt them). Because they like to climb and are actually quiet active animals. It’s best to get them a large cage, if you don’t have the space or the money, then consider buying them activity type toys.
…They chew…a lot…I had two escape by chewing their cages. Watch for any small holes.
They only live for a short while, mine all lived for a couple of years, but they usually last about a year and a half. They have very poor vision and are color blind, but they have extremely strong senses of hearing, smell, touch and taste.
If you do want to breed Rats, they can start reproducing at three months old! Rats have four to six litters a year and each litter has about 6 to 12 babies in it. Rats are only pregnant for about 21 to 23 days…You know, only 21 to 23 days.
…Not that I take it personally, my Chinese astrological sign is The Rat.
There are lot of people out there who confused rats with hamsters…I don’t know how
“True rats” are members of the genus Rattus, the most important of which to humans are the black rat, Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus. Many members of other rodent genera and families are also referred to as rats, and share many characteristics with true rats.
Over the years some Rats have been taught to be “tamed”…Depending on how long back your pet Rat’s genetics go back can depend on how tamed they are. They are just as healthy as any cat or dog. Some Rats have been taught how to do “tricks” showing how intelligent they can be! They have a very short life span though.

Rats got a bad wrap really in the time of the Bubonic Plague and were totally blamed for the rapid spread. They have now found that they weren’t completely too blame. It spread so quickly and there was no way that it was just the Rats. They are now just starting to discover that, mainly larger, Rats can actually detect tuberculous!
The Rat is also, of course, the first Chinese Astrological Sign…and it’s my sign as well!
It’s generally believed that people who are born in the Year of the Rat are:
- Quick Witted
- Good at saving
It can also depend which you were born as well. There are four different elements to each Chinese Signs:
- Earth and.
I am a “Wood Rat”.
Which Chinese Astrological animal are you? Have you had pet rats, like myself?
