World Rat Day

If you don’t like Rats, or are frightened of them. Stop reading this post.

World Rat Day was founded in 2002 by a group of pet rat enthusiasts who wanted to challenge the stigma surrounding these creatures and give them the celebration they truly deserve. The day aims to shed a positive light on these animals and promote their care and welfare

I was born in the year of the Chinese Rat…I’ve had many pet rats over the years.

According to the Chinese zodiac, in the competition held by the Jade Emperor to decide the zodiac animals, the quick-witted rat asked the diligent ox to take him on a ride to cross the river and jumped down before the ox crossed the finish line. Thus the rat won the race and became the first of the zodiac animals, followed by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

World Rat Day

If you don’t like Rats, stop…

stop reading….

I’m serious…

Anyone who keeps rats as pets or companions is already in on the secret: these animals are friendly, loyal, intelligent, and very endearing. Unfortunately they’ve had a bit of bad press over the years, what with the Black Death, Bubonic Plague and a thousand Pacific islands which have had their native wildlife chewed down to ground level and beyond. What’s a few environmental and social catastrophes between friends?

Pet Rats though are the cutest little things and make for some great first time pets! I have had 3 pet rats over my life time. My mum used to breed them!

Rats! That’s it really…Rats, so awesome!

I have completely stolen this from ““Cute Overload”” …(check them out for something to make you grin)

I am SUCH  a fan of Rats, I’ve had about 4 throughout my whole life and they are probably one of the most underestimated “pets” in the world. Clearly not those big wild rats, but Rats that are raised for being pets.

I train my pet rats using clicker training and positive reinforcement. Their favorite treats are cheerios, but they also enjoy working for dog treats, peas, and dinner left overs.

My rats are from various sources, if you are interested in getting pet rats, check local spca’s and rats rescues.
