A Lord of Shadows

I finished this book a while ago. One of the reasons though I am able to write about it a bit later is that I actually bought the book. Which means I have been able to go back and forth reminding myself *if I’ve needed too*

(You can also find me on Goodread here and see what else I’m reading at the moment)

I really enjoy writing and reviewing Cassandra Clare’s book. They are such a joy to read and I love encouraging people to read them…In series order of course! I will also warn, that if you haven’t read it yet, I will probably more than likely be revealing a couple of things. Although if you read the first book “Lady Midnight” you will probably know a couple of these things that I talk about.

Negative Bits:

I wanted to get this over and done with. Mainly because then I can just write to my hearts content how fabulous this book is!

The main issue that I had with this book is the same issue that I’ve always had, with all the Shadowhunters book. It does annoy me that, even though, the Parabatai are “supposed” to be able to tell how each other is feeling. It always seems to be conveniently misplaced, when it’s…well…convenient.

For those who do not know what a ‘Parabatai’ is. It’s a bond between two people. Can be male and female, male and male, female and female and siblings. When I say “bond” I mean they are SUPPOSED to be able to sense how the other one is feeling. Not reading minds, but they can essentially feel when something is off. Now if I was dating someone to pretend to be in love with them, so my Parabatai couldn’t tell that I was in love with them. That would be a pretty hard thing to “pretend”. Especially when you’ve been so closely bonded with someone for such a long time.

Positive Bits:

I have always loved Cassandra Clare novels. There really isn’t anything to negative that I can say about the books. I have noticed that “The Dark Artifices” are quiet a bit longer than Cassandra Clares’, previous series’s … And I have been loving it! Finally a well written, book that flows beautifully that takes a while to read! One of the major points that I really loved was that, although the book is long, it was a great read. I feel like that is SO important!

I have picked up so many a large book and I just haven’t been able to get through. Take “The Hobbit” for example. I’ve only ever been able to read about a quarter of the book. I stopped reading it because “The Hobbit” is a book that you need to be able to spend time to read. Whereas “Lord of Shadows” is simple to read. Yet, I couldn’t put it down either.

I already know that I am asking for “The Queen of Air and Darkness” for my Christmas present this year! It’s coming out, just in time for Christmas…You can pre-order it now! (Disclaimer – I am not being paid for this)

Small Great Things or Talk Great Big Things?

*spoiler alert*

I don’t know why I wrote that title, it really doesn’t make that much sense. Here we have though another review! I really am enjoying these, I think I will be keeping these up in the new year. I may be changing the lay outs of my reviews…Watch this space for more!

The reason I wrote the title that I did was because I feel like this book has brought up some great big issues, that are very relevant for today. So let’s talk!…Write as the case may be.

Jodi Picoult: Small Great Things

The Break Down :

Ruth Jefferson works in Connecticut Hospital as a labour and delivery nurse, she has worked confidently for over 20 years, and working for many years as a single mother. During one shift Ruth begins her routine checkup on a newborn and when she returns, she has been told that she had been reassigned. As you read further into the book you find out that the parents are white supremacist, who do not want an African American taking care of their baby.

The Hospital takes the side of the parents and posts a post-it note. Even though this rule IS discriminatory.

During the next day the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone with the baby. Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and when the baby dies, Ruth is charged with a serious crime.

Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong.

Positive:

This book is an interesting one to read and is strongly written as well. I felt so uncomfortable reading it, but I felt like I needed to read it. As a white woman, there are topics that come up in the book that I had never considered before. Even thought it made me feel uncomfortable, I am very glad that I read it. You can tell that Jodi Picoult actually put a lot of research into it.

Even thought it is an extremely depressing type and eye-opening written book, it was so well written that you keep reading. I did struggle to read it initially because I was finding the topic so hard to read about. I am one of those positive people, that just wants to believe in the best in people. I found it hard to read because I just wanted the Hospital to stand up for Ruth and I wanted the white supremacist to get “over themselves” so to speak. I don’t get being angry at someone when you don’t know them.

This is an eye opening book! I cannot repeat this enough!

Negative:

Even though it was a great book I just didn’t like the ending. It felt like an Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader kind of scenario. I felt that it just happened too fast. It wasn’t the result of the court case that annoyed me, that was great. It was the very last chapter, about the father of the dead baby.

What I mean by Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader fast. I mean that one of the characters suddenly seems to switch complete personality, like a total finger click. I am not going to say which character in this book does that. I am just having a hard time believing that someone would change that fast. Sure it jumps ahead a few years into the future in the last chapter, which might account for the change. Considering it’s the very next chapter though in “our world”, I just found it difficult to believe.

Overall:

Overall I really enjoyed the book, even though it did make me squirm and made me feel uncomfortable,e but it was not because of bad writing or bad characters. I highly recommend everyone read this book, no matter your colour of skin!

Three Queens and Three Sister Review

This is my review of the book “Three Queens and Three Sister, author is Phillipa Gregory.

Enjoy the spoilers if you choose to read!…I just wanted to start this off by saying it is not a book based on actual facts, it’s an interpretation of the facts so it can be a fictional story…Hence the “fictional” part. It’s just a fictional interpretation of what happened.

Brief outline of the book

The book takes place in merry old England, around the time of King Henry the 8th. The book is very solely focused though on the story of one his more unknown older sister (I actually didn’t even know that he had other siblings) Princess Margaret. The book starts and first takes place when Katherine of Aragon first comes to court. At first she is expecting to marry Prince Arthur (Henry’s older brother and should have been King!) who does pass away just a few months after they are married. Margaret as a young Princess has an instant dislike for Katherine of Aragon, with her “fancy ways”. However her other younger sister, Mary, has an instant connection with Katherine.

The book tells of the three young women and their life journey from young ladies until all three are Queens at some point along the way. Through, death, love, birth and life.

Positive aspects

I have been wanting to read any of the Phillipa Gregory books for quiet a while now and I did not feel disappointed. If you can get past the whines of Margaret it’s a very enjoyable book. I enjoy books about “court life” from ‘merry ole England’ and this was no different. What I took from it as well, is that I enjoyed it so much that I spent the next day researching all of Henry the 8th’s family members. What I found to be the most interesting about it is that knowing that Phillipa had some research into the book, most of the events in the book actually happened.

The relationship between the three women was intriguing as well. I didn’t really understand why they called themselves sisters when they weren’t really THAT friendly towards each other. If someone I’m not even blood related too kills my husband (guaranteed during War) and doesn’t leave his body for me to bury and brings it back to their land as a “trophy”. Just as some sort of making up that they aren’t producing sons, you are not my sister. It honestly fascinates me, is this what it was like? Too keep up appearances did they have to seem like they were “sisters”? How annoying!

Negative aspects

Overall I really did enjoy the book and I will continue to read Phillipa Gregory, but no book can be perfect!

There was one aspect of the book that really did annoy me. There just seemed to be chapter after chapter of the exact same situation and it became very repetitive very quickly. It just felt like I was reading the same thing for about 10 chapters in a row. She leaves her husband Archibald because he was still apparently married to another woman and was just using the Queen for her lands and money. So she left him, they’d have a battle, she’d lose, run away somewhere else, get a letter from Katherine and Mary saying to go back to her cheating, traitorous husband, they’d get back together (even though she hates him), he leaves and repeat. I am not lying when I say this happened about 5 times in a instant row.

Overall

I really did enjoy the book and I have put the book previous to this one and the book after this one, so I think that’s a pretty good indication.

Do we actually prefer negativity?

I am starting to believe that quiet a few people out there actually prefer negative, they want it, they need it…God knows why…I try to avoid at all costs…But I’m starting to wonder if we prefer negative over positive? I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately.

I went to write a review on Goodreads and I read the comments about the book I just read and I have to say I agreed with some of what they were saying. Some of them weren’t so nice and some were down right nasty and uncalled for. I realised that all the negative comments seemed to get all the most comments and likes.

Do these people not want people to read?

In my reviews I’m honest about what I thought was negative, but I don’t really give bad reviews and I definitely do not attack the author or people who are fans of the book. There was one reviewer who even admitted to not reading the book and had just read a few excerpts and she knew that she didn’t have to read it to know it was bad. That review had more likes than people who HAD read it and liked it. The irony was she became very offended when other people said that we shouldn’t take her review seriously because she didn’t even read the book. Then attacked all the other people and told them to stay off her review. Then said they were “hopeless fan-girls”. I did point out that Goodreads is actually a public forum and if people don’t agree or don’t like what she wrote that they have every right to tell her so.

Or the situation with Ed Sheeran being on Games of Thrones. I usually tape and watch it a couple of days later, so when I heard that Ed was terrible and it was the worst scene ever in the history of the show. I was expecting something truly terrible. When I realised the scene coming I braced myself for some terribleness (apparently that’s an actual word, lol). He sang a 30 second “diddly” and that was it…It was such a big nothingness. I kept waiting for the bad to happen…and nothing, he didn’t say another word. It was a good diddly too.

What about those Instagram, Facebook pages etc. That people create where all they do is “bash” on a celebrity? If you don’t like someone don’t watch, scroll past, don’t press the link. I’ve seen so many people, for example, hate on Kylie Jenners new show, by saying how boring or or how bad it is…But they watched it? I do genuinely believe that they don’t like her, but why are they watching the show? When I don’t like an artist or a show, I just don’t watch it. My life is hard enough without constantly concentrating on things that I don’t even like?lol

What about having both?!

This post was inspired by an article that I read recently about a tv show here called “The Project”. There sort of a news program, there more like the current affair show that came on after the new, but they’re a little more relaxed. Their quote is “News delivered differently”.

Anyways, I’m not here to write about that program. This post was inspired by a particular section that they were talking about “Carrie Bickmore becomes emotional over body image issues” . They were talking about having positive/negative body issues. Carrie became emotional because she feels like she wants to help her daughter (two years old) have a positive image of her body, but feels like it’s getting out of control.

My issue with it, is that it is beyond fantastic to have a good body and healthy image of yourself. However, I feel the first step to get a good and positive body image is to get yourself a good and positive mind.

At the end of the day you can’t hold onto a lot of things regarding your body, if your mind isn’t thinking positively either. We’re human after all, we will have days when we don’t feel good about ourselves and it’s those moments where our minds can really play with us. Our minds playing up can have a lot of impacts on our body and how we view ourselves.

So how about teaching our daughters and young girls to feel settled within their minds first and then our bodies will probably “fall into line” so to speak.

Personally, when my mind is not okay, I don’t honestly care what I look like.

The Funniest of Us

For those who have just joined, I usually do my “Lolsy’s Libraries Lessons of Life” in a picture quote, but something just tickled my funny bone and it wasn’t going to fit in a picture quote.

One of the things (I think I may have written about it before) I find really funny about people are the people who constantly have to talk about what they hate. You know, when a article is put anywhere, Facebook, general news sites…That sort of thing and people have this almost, need, to comment either about the journalism sucks or is this really news?

Why they make me laugh so much, it’s because do they not get, that they are creating “traffic” for that site. Every time they look at a page, every time they comment, every time they like a comment, whether that be their own or someone else’s. These page DO NOT CARE if you don’t like the new article or not, they do not care if you like the journalism or not, chances are they aren’t even reading your comments. If you giving these journalist traffic on their articles, they will be kept on and they will keep reporting.

A couple of things I can suggest if you honestly want to see less of these articles popping up in your feed. Unfollow everything, don’t go on the pages that you don’t want too (which seems like common sense…but you know people and common sense these days). On Facebook and the news article on there you can select to not see particular articles. I don’t see anything about certain reality tv families anymore etc.

You can literally take this sort of stuff out of your life, if you REALLY want too. If you don’t, maybe you should ask yourself why,lol

My Beauty and the Beast review

Now we all know I am probably going to write an extremely positive review of this movie, Beauty and the Beast, because I have been waiting with postivity since the first day I found out it was even coming out. However, you never truly know how a movie is going to affect you…I might have totally hated it…except for the fact that…I TOTALLY FREAKING LOVED IT!!!

It’s a few days later and I am still on this total happy natural high. It is amazing =D I haven’t felt like this for a really long time.

One of the things that I loved about the animation was that Belle seemed like a departure from the usual “damsel in distress-is doing everything for a man” and READS! Also I could relate to her on a more personal level. Everyone telling me all the time I look gorgeous, but at the same time people consistently making fun of me for being so “odd”. In both the animation and the live action film. The song “Belle” which is one of the first songs (I think it is actually the first song) which introduced us to Belle, both the animation and live action, made me cry. I believe that a soundtrack can break or make a movie, as well as the acting and the plot.

What I really loved and appreciated about this movie was that it extended all the good points of the animation.

There is much more diversity, Belle tries to teach a little girl how to read despite the outrage, much more background on characters, which makes you understand them more. I’m sure you’ve heard about Josh Gad, who plays LeFou, Gastons “sidekick” and the gay “controversy” surrounding that character. The problems for all suffering from illiteracy.

You do You and no one else…

So I was having an argument with someone that was hating on a celebrity and that was the really odd thing to me. I feel really sorry for celebrities sometimes, they just cannot win. They get told to shut up and who cares about the opinions of a celebrity, but then if they say nothing either they are considered “problematic”…Now I know this may come as a shock to some…

We own no one and maybe some things to some people are just private…No celebrity on this earth is obligated to speak or not to speak.

It also made me start thinking about how weird some people hating on a celebrity. I actually think it’s weird to hate on a celebrity than to like one, or have a crush on one. By “hate” I don’t mean you just dislike the person, but you actively try to destroy that persons career, or for every single positive comments towards a celebrity, they have to make a negative or demeaning comment…Usually towards another stranger,

How is it a normal thing to actively hate on people you don’t know? Don’t these people have anything better to do? Doesn’t your world have enough problems?

Celebrities are their own people and just like you and me they have things they like to keep to themselves and it’s personal for them and that’s fine.

thats-fine

In a time that is just so uncertain and every day something worse seems to happen, it’s even more important than ever to be truly true to who we are. Someone made a really good point as well. Instead of focusing SO much on the celebrity that wont talk about the issue you care about, why don’t you use that energy for YOU talk about the cause YOU care about, instead of ignoring it and focusing on somebody else. Generally, most of the time, someone you don’t even know.

If you care, then you talk about that. Don’t worry or stress about someone who doesn’t even know you and what they’re doing. This is your life and do you really want it to be about how you complained about what you thought someone else should be doing with their life? Is that what you really want to be remembered for?

I don’t “care”

There is something that really intrigues me and I would really love to hear your opinions on it or if you are one these people who do this, to please explain what this need this.

What is with this seemingly big NEED that some people have to write on news articles or ‘entertainment’ type articles about how they “don’t care” they have “real news to read” and is this article really “newsworthy”. What are they doing there then? Personally, when I see an article I’m not interested in I skip pass it. I actually asked someone this question because I find it really intriguing, that whole thought process. Of creating traffic for something you don’t care about, rather than creating traffic and focusing on the things you do. Then boasting about how you don’t care, like it’s some great feat and accomplishment that you just HAD to write that?

I am like 99% sure no one is making these people read these articles. So why are they even reading these articles for? Do they not have enough to care about? Do they have a lot of free time that they have the time to focus on things they don’t care about?

I have always said that the Kardashians are being kept in our public eye, not because of their fans, but because of their haters. They are making their numbers and money from their haters. For example, the amount of articles I have seen people comment and re-share articles about them is literally in the thousands…but…they “hate” them? Yet my brother and his friends seem to really like them, yet I rarely hear them talk about them. I only found that they like them last year, when my brother was over for a visit and there was a Kardashian marathon on the tv…We had to watch it all day -.-

For those who may not know what I mean by “traffic”. It means when you click on a article online, or you comment online, you are creating “traffic” that the website keeps tracks of to see, what people are interested in and what the public is talking about. They don’t care what you deem “newsworthy” or what “real news” is, or if you like the article or not. What they focus on is the numbers that each article receives. So by you “not caring” and clicking on a article you don’t “care” about, it creates interests and so that site will continue to talk about it.

Even take WordPress, how many of us have edited our Blogs and write about topics that interest people more than what we actually want to write about, based on the views, discussions and likes we have gotten for our posts.

Please discuss!
