International Coming Out Day

Coming Out Day is an internationally observed civil awareness day celebrating individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender—coming out regarding one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity being akin to a cultural rite of passage for LGBT people. The day is observed annually by members of the LGBT community and allies on October 11.

National Coming Out Day is observed in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Croatia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

I am straight, so today is not my day. However, I wanted to write something.

What I’ve learnt this Pride 2021

A lot of organisations have the Pride Flag in their company’s logo with no understanding of what it stands for and what it represents. If the LGBTQIA community had given into bigots and bullies, especially transphobia this year, there would be no Pride Month to begin with!

I’m looking at you Royal Academy.

Pride March! Enjoy!

Today is a day where the LGBTQIA get to stand with Pride, after literal centuries of abuse, harassment and murder…Oh wait, that’s still happening.

Anyway, today, mainly in the UK. Lots of Marches will be taking place, virtually and in real life too!

Gay pride or LGBT pride is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements.

TERFs and Homophobes going to be coming up with all sorts of theories today. Enjoy #PRIDE and kick the TERDs out! The whole point of Pride is too stand up against the bigotry that the LGBTQIA community have experienced for literal centuries. When people attack one “letter” they are attacking all the letters…and oh my god, I really wish bigots would stop whining!

What I have to say about Laurel Hubbard

…It’s all positive by the way…

I say good for her! Laurel Hubbard is the first person to have qualified for the Olympics and is trans gender. Now, the International Olympics Committee, roughly a decade now, made it so that trans people can qualify and complete. Of course those trans people have to meet certain requirements. Laurel Hubbard, as an example, as met those requirements. It’s not like Laurel Hubbard went “Oh, I’m a trans woman now, let me into the Olympics” She had to meet certain requirements beforehand. She had to WORK at it, and meet the requirements, set by the IOC.

So I say good on her! I’m a few years younger than her and with a “bummy” leg”. If I could at this age, compete in the Olympics, I would, because why not. I am impressed, she is competing with people half her age. She’s not even the number one women in women’s weight lifting, Hubbard is ranked seventh in the IWF’s women’s +87kg division.

What can you do during Pride Month?

So, like a lot of others in the world. Some places are starting to loosen up restrictions. Which means YAY and also NAY for some.

Now, if you’re like me. When my state first had it’s restrictions loosened, I really struggled to head out. When I did, I couldn’t be quiet, but my energy was depleted really quickly.

So, Lolsys Library, what can we do if we want to celebrate Pride, but don’t really want to go out? Or you’re not ready to head yet and PAR-TAY! What can you do?

There are plenty of options!

  • Tune into any virtual Pride events and stream!
  • While you’re streaming, why not make some rainbow treats! – Delish cooking
  • Why not listen to some LGBT friendly podcasts?!
  • Borrow, or even better, buy books. That are about the LGBTQIA life, written by LGBTQIA authors.
  • Support LGBT Pride Businesses.
  • Some suggestions have been to find a LGBTQIA colouring book. I think it’s fine though with any colouring in book. Especially if you have colouring in books, that are just patterns. I have a few that are “dream animals” type patterns. However, clearly during this month, specific LGBT colouring in books would be preferable. – Coloring Book Addict (Pride LGBTQ+ Coloring Books)
  • Writing about colouring in…Why not do some LGBT friendly art!
  • When you go to shops, wear those rainbows and rainbows colours!

A little bit of LGBT “Science”

Just a quick blog about some of the History behind LGBT. I decided to write this, because a lot of TERFs and Gender Criticals don’t like being compared to the Far Right, Fascists’, or the beginning of the Nazis. Honestly, I don’t care if you don’t like being compared to a group that you don’t like, especially if you are doing what they do, or what they have done.

Expect a lot of “Did you know”

So…Did you know that the Nazi’s actually burnt down the first “modern day” LGBTQIA learning center?

LGBTQ Institute in Germany was burned down by Nazi’s – Teen Vogue, 2017: LUCY DIAVOLO

On May 6, 1933, Nazi demonstrators raided the libraries of the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, a German name that roughly translates to the Institute of Sexology. The Institute was a privately operated research space for studies of human sexuality. More than 20,000 books were taken from shelves and burned days later in the streets by Nazi youth groups.

It was a blow to the life’s work of Magnus Hirschfeld, the institute’s founder. Hirschfeld, was himself Jewish and gay. He was a pioneer for rights and liberation in Berlins LGBTQ community. Founding the institute in 1919, after beginning his career as an activist in 1896, he created the pamphlet Sappho and Socrates, about a gay man who took his own life after he felt he was being coerced into a straight marriage.

The resources and data at Institut für Sexualwissenschaft were never replaced.

The next two links, are links to papers that demonstrate how the a trans brain works and how a gay brain works. These are very complicated. These are actual academic papers, and are not from teen vogue.

It should also be noted that LGBTQIA is a relatively new “Science”, so not everything is 100% known. Especially since the destruction of Magnus Hirschfeld’s work, there’s hasn’t been much to go on. Other than how older cultures and religions have represented the LGBTQIA community.

Breast cancer risk in transgender people receiving hormone treatment: nationwide cohort study in the Netherlands

This large nationwide cohort study in the Netherlands showed an increased risk of breast cancer in trans women compared with cisgender men. The risk in trans women is still lower than in Dutch cisgender women and resembles a more female type of breast cancer and hormone receptor status. In trans men, a lower risk compared with Dutch cisgender women was observed.

This is a completely fascinating paper. If you don’t want to read too much, and you’re like me. Not very smart, Science-wise. This has pictures! Haha … Showing the differences, and you can definitely see them!

Taylor Swift’s Newest Track – You Need To Calm Down — The Tony Burgess Blog

Taylor Swift goes after twitter haters and those who hate the LGBTQ community. Her song writing is so clever you need to listen to it a couple of times to get what she is singing about. This video is using a colorful palate to get its point across.

Loving it!

For those wondering at home, Beyonce did not invent the pool party…Lying on a big floatie “video”. Even the caravan scene, Beyonce wasn’t the first. I love them both…but you need to calm down, lol

Pose

Pose – 2018 IMDb

Here we are with another television series review! I just loved this one so much and I wanted to share it with you all, so if it comes up on your Netflix or something, you know…This…I want to watch this.

Dear Lord, now I hope that I do it justice!

What is “Pose?”

First you need to know that Pose is set around the end of the 1980’s. Aids is about and there not yet a “cure” for it. At this point I’m not even sure about the research at the time. Despite that, it’s a show that takes a look at African American, transsexual and gay POC and how they have found the “Ballroom” where they “Pose” (lol). Where they are free to be who they truly want to be, where it was SAFE for them to be who they wanted to be. It takes a look at how society, not only white, religious and the straight community treated trans people. How they treated each other through their placing in society and whether or not they “pass”. By pass I mean that by being a transgender person, whether or not they pass for looking female…or male.

Have to warn you…

Homer Simpson Spoilers GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

 I will be writing spoilers….

The characters:

I have to start off by saying that I very much dislike how on the IMDb page they have put Evan Peters at the top of their list. I get that he is more probably well known then the others and he is actually in every episode (I haven’t seen the last two yet though, at this point). However, is he not really a main character, they could have literally any white guy play his part. Peter Evans plays the typical white married family man who…I can’t even say “falls in love”…But he becomes intoxicated by one of the ladies. So, enough about that.

I don’t know which character I loved more to be completely honest with you. What I loved about this show was that the characters were REAL. How can I describe it too you? A lot of the actual actors in this show are actually Transsexual AND Transgender to begin with, so they are absolutely coming from a place of realness. Pose is to date, the show with the largest reoccurring transsexual actors.

From the top of my head my favourite character has to be Pray Tell played by Billy Porter. The sassy dressmaker and DJ, speaker and in the opening credit that is his voice. I think I loved him the most because he was just so open and raw. Pray Tell was the character with the boyfriend, dying from Aids. When he finds out that he had Aids, he tries to keep it together but cannot anymore after making a promise to live to his dying boyfriend. It’s not just your usual promise to be happy either. It was a promise to be happy because Pray Tell has the aids and even though Pray Tell does not want to tell his boyfriend, but he can see it in Pray Tells eyes, be happy.

House of Evangelista

A “House” is where you get, pretty much, lost causes, and help each other and support each other to succeed. Well, that’s what they are supposed to be about, not every House is so supportive. They learn, they learn though. Both Houses have a “Mother” and you have to respect their rules, each house has a different mother and different rules.

The House of Evangelista are the main protagonist of the show, other than Pray Tell and Elektra Abundance from House of Abundance (who I also love).

Ryan Jamaal Swain Family GIF by Pose FX - Find & Share on GIPHY

The House of Evangelista consist of “Mother” Blanca Rodriguez, recently diagnosed with AIDS. Finally tired of feeling held back in the House of Abundance (lead by “Mother” the fabulous Elektra Abundance) Blanca decides to head out and start her own House. Along the way she bumps into a young Damon Richards a young gay man whose just been kicked out of his house (for being gay) and a beautiful Angel (that’s her name) a young transsexual having to sell her body for sex, which is where she meets Evan Peters character.

A bunch of misfits, just starting out in the Ballroom world.

What I really love about the show:

Not only does the show have the most transsexual reoccurring actors on a show. It still looks at all the topics surrounding gay people in the 80’s. Unlike a lot of other shows though, it doesn’t get to dark, but still keeps the seriousness. I absolutely love the relationship between Damon and Ricky (played by Dyllon Burnside). In all honesty I think it’s not only the first relationship I’ve seen between POC LGBT gay men, but it’s the most sweetest relationship I have seen between two men, just in general. Without the over PDA…I can’t stand that no matter what!lol

Ben Stiller Awww GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

What I love most about the show though, even with the competing House. They are still there for each other. The show shows what a family can be, that a family does not have to be “blood”. They just have to “be”.

Scar Jo

Oh dear lordy, Scarlett Johansson has done it again…

Head Table GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

It did make me start though how many times has this happened…I started to compile a last, of just the last few years alone.

Scarlett Johansson – Transgender, Ghost in the Shell – Not transgender, not Asian

Nick Robinson – Love, Simon…Is in fact, not gay. Even though a lot of his co-stars are.

Death Note – With the white American boy…Have to be honest, I didn’t even watch it…It was a mostly white cast though, wasn’t it?

I guess I don’t understand in this day and age, where everything is so finely scrutinised…How these studios are still screwing it up? I have a hard time believing that there isn’t a good enough transgender person, Asian, or gay actor…That could play these roles instead?

Now, I’m not big in the whole Hollywood industry thing…I am pretty sure though that there are enough Asian, Gay, Transgender people in the community. Heck, I am sure that there is a Asian Gay Transgender person!
