Safari Love Live!

For those who read my Blog a bit you’ll know my obsession with the Nat Geo’s Wild Safari Live and how much I love it (you can also find the drives on Ustream WildEarth Safari). Usually what I’ll do is make a post about new baby animals or just introduce or update on the more well known animals. Some of the animals even have their own Facebook page! (Will post links at the bottom).

Today I just want to explain a little bit about why I love this live web feed/stream so much.

The drive is kind of my form of mediation these days, even when the predators are on a hunt (which if they get a kill I can never watch). It brings me back to reality, animals, especially wild animals live in the moment. They are living minute to minute. Things can change so rapidly overnight for them.

It’s made me love animals that you would think would be unlovable. I for one am now am a big fan of Hyenas and Warthogs. You really do get to see these animals, live and wild, the strongest bonds of family. Mama warthogs are extremely protective of their little piglets and the little piglets are just a joy to watch. They bound around so much and are full of energy.

The people, the guides and the chatters (I’m mainly in the Social Stream). The guides are so friendly and they keep it so real. Even when something unpleasant has happened, they are there to remind us about the harshness of the wild, but also the love and how resilient the wild is.

So what do I do when the safari drives are off? Which is a good question, the safari drives are only on for three hours two times a day. Never fear! You can always go to the Djuma Cam and Pete’s Pond while you wait for the drives. I like to have them on the in the morning when I’m first getting up, it’s very therapeutic. You can just chat with the other viewers, there’s usually someone around as the cam’s and the drives have viewers from everyone all over the globe.

Junior of the Nkuhuma Pride (Facebook) … Junior is “unique” he’s the offspring of the Matimba Males, who were overthrown by the Birmingham Boys. However, the Lionesses of the Nkuhuama were able to help support him grow into a much larger male. We’re not sure where Junior is now because the BBoys are dominate and he would have been chased off. He’s special because he was with the NK Lionesses for such long time, much longer than usual.

I made a thing! A Jelly thing =D

This year I have been really getting into cooking, I may have mentioned somewhere in a previous Blog. I can cook to “survive” but I’ve never really gotten into cooking. It’s interesting really pretty much all of the women in my family can cook, we can cook to live, but all the men in my family, they are the ones that are the creative in the kitchen.

I had seen this “glass jelly cake” all over my Facebook page and I just thought that it looked really good and it looked really easy to make. So I decided to make it.

The usual name for this “cake” is either called a “Rainbow Jelly/O Cake” or “Stained Glass Cake”.

So here are the steps (I swear that this is SO easy to make):

Step 1: Choose your flavours (I pretty much just picked any that looked good at the time, you can choose whatever you want…I am going to be getting green and red and make a Christmas one).

Step 2: Place the jelly crystals into containers (use a different container for each colour, remembering that the length and shape of the container will determine how big the jelly squares will be)

Step 3: Boil one (1) cup of water (most jelly packets will tell you to use two (2)cups, do not follow packet directions). The jelly squares will be more sturdy.

Step 4: Pour the boiling *be careful* water into the containers, stir the jelly crystals until the crystals dissolve.

Step 5: Once the crystals have dissolve place the containers into the fridge and wait a few hours.

Step 6: Once you have waited a few hours, take containers out and either:

a) Cut the jelly into squares while in the containers and then placed them into a bowl/tray/case, or
b) Place Jelly into warm water for a FEW seconds and then, in one of the corners, wait for an air pocket and then it should fall out.

Step 7: Cut up all the jelly squares and mix them up, so all colours are mixed up together evenly (this was the hardest part of the whole thing! The jelly will stick to your fingers!)

Step 8: Fill 1/2 a cup with cold water and place two packet of clear and unflavoured gelatin in until the gelatin has “bloomed”.

Step 9: Pour into the same bowl, 1 and 1/2 cups of boiling water and one can of sweetened condensed milk…Stir it all together and wait for it to cool.

Step 10: Once the mixture has cooled down, then pour the mixture over the jelly squares

*Be careful of the tin that you use! I used one and didn’t realise that it was going to leak everywhere…After I took this photo I had to swap tins*

Step 11: Place back into fridge and wait for a few hours (most people suggest overnight)

Enjoy!

Just so you know, it will be really sweet, but really light…Very refreshing! Great for a treat when it’s warm!

Do I or Don’t I?

I am having a bit of an conundrum and I would love my readers to give me some advice. At the moment there are not many people who I know who would be able to help me with this ‘situation’. Once I’ve gotten a clearer mind and am more sure it’s what I really want to do, I will know which step to take next.

While fighting with my ex last year, I bumped into another ex of mine. Literally in the middle of a fight with my last ex and I literally bumped into the one before him. We had a pleasant exchange (apart from the total and utter fear on his face). Recently in my state we had huge devastating bush-fires and I know that his parents house was in this area. He doesn’t know that I know he now lives with his current girlfriend. However, it has made me think a lot because the place we “bumped” into each other was actually where I work.

I don’t hate him anymore and I don’t want him to fear coming into where I work. Especially with the bush-fires it’s made me realise that I know he wasn’t a bad guy and a lot of his lying was to protect me, in his own weird way. I was his first ever girlfriend and he was so used to being a “player” that lying is honestly the only way he knows of.

My question is, should I unblock him from my Facebook and write just a little message saying that I hope his family are alright and he does not have to fear coming into where I work?

Wild Earth Safari

Since the beginning of October I have been watching a web cab feed called “Wild Earth Safari” and in Australia they run from 2:30pm-5:30pm and 12:30am to 3:30am. The web cam feed runs until January the 31st (although I, and many others, have asked, if there is any possibility of them running longer than that).

These feeds are taken from the game reserves of Djuma Game Reserve and Arathusa Safari Lodge in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. You can all sorts of animal Lions, Leopards, Hippos, Ellies and Impala…Oh My!

They have experienced rangers and guides that drive around and along the way for the couple of hours they are with you. They will inform, and educate on a wide range of the flora and fauna of the animals and plants within their game reserves. They are incredibly good teachers and even when you see the true side of nature and the wild. They remind of you of “This is nature”.

I suggest you go and have a look at Wild Earth Safari and I’ll see you on the drive!
