Yes…I totally stole the title from John Oliver’s segment…That’s not the issue here =P
How is this still a thing? John Oliver
Recently I saw an ad for a current television current affair show program…I probably could have just written current affair show…Anyway I digress…
I get waiting a couple to a few hours at the emergency room can be frustrating, but I can’t understand why there’s a sudden increase in people getting threatening and getting violent at emergency waiting rooms.
I suspect it has something do with the sudden in increase of “It’s all about me” of all generations, even still though, surely common sense should prevail? Apparently not, even with all the information being constantly give to us about visiting the emergency room when there is an actual emergency. People seem to be on this increase, ignoring this entirely and feel the appropriate reaction is to yell and scream at the emergency staff.
Now, I can understand people becoming paranoid and Googling any symptoms they have and visiting the emergency, especially since visiting the emergency rooms and being seen too is free (I suspect that is part of it too). However, what I cannot fathom to understand is the abusive attitudes towards the staff, when you’ve had to wait for a couple of hours. Which is what will probably happen and has been happening for a long time. If you’ve got a cold, you’re going to have to wait, it’s a fact of life.
I know it may be hard for some to think of others when their entire life is all “Me, Me, Me” but you HAVE to remember, this is the emergency room. People ARE dying, this is no joke. This is actually a life and death issue. I’m sure that you wouldn’t appreciate it if someone with a sniffle is taking the Doctors and Nurses away from you because they are getting aggressive. It’s one of those situations where I beg people to think of others.
