Just look!

World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants.  The first World Elephant Day was launched on August 12, 2012, to highlight the plight of Asian and African elephants.

The World Elephant Day was initiated on August 12, 2012, when Thailand-based Elephant Reintroduction Foundation teamed up with Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims. This is not just a day but a movement in itself. Since 2012, Ms Sims has been leading World Elephant Day.

Some elephant facts:

Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth

Their tusks are actually teeth.

There are three different species of elephant – the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant.

Elephants need up to 150kg of food per day – that’s around 375 tins of baked beans although half of this may leave the body undigested.

Elephant tusks never stop growing, so enormous tusks can be a sign of an old elephant. Both male and female African elephants grow tusks, but only male Asian elephants grow them.

A single calf is born to a female once every four to five years and after a gestation period of 22 months—the longest of any mammal.

World Polar Bear

We have probably all seen the horrific images of those starving polar bears, heartbreaking. Although those images are our reality, I wanted to try and keep it a little light. I am usually against trying to humanise animals, but maybe if we did…People might care more?

Adopt a polar bear – WWF

What are some things though you may not know about the polar bear?

  • While climate change is affecting polar bear. It’s is mainly humans destroying their habitats, making room for more oiling and drilling, that is truly killing them off. Contact with oil spills can reduce the insulating effect of a bear’s fur requiring them to use more energy to get warm, and can poison them if ingested
  • Grizzy-Polar Hybrids exist. Aso known as ‘grolar bears’ or ‘pizzly bears
  • Scientists can extract polar bear DNA from their footprints.
  • Although they are “bears”, Polar Bears are considered aqua animals as well, because of their dependence on so much from the sea.
  • Cubs are usually born from November to February, and will nurse for about two and a half years.

Orangutan Day!

When my brother and I were younger, my Gran used to call us her little Orangutans. When we were unsure of something or someone, we hold onto each other.

Dr Pol Monkey GIF by Nat Geo Wild - Find & Share on GIPHY

First fact, it is extremely hard to get a gif with an Orangutan in it’s natural habitat, or just natural surrounding area.

Orangutans are not “monkeys” they are considered to be a great ape. They also share 97% of DNA in common with us.

In Malay and Indonesian orang means “person” and utan is derived from hutan, which means “forest.” Thus, orangutan literally means “person of the forest.”

They are considered critically endangered.

One of the biggest threats facing Orangutan’s is deforestation. The main reason that people are cutting their trees down, is for palm oil. So, beware of products that have palm oil in it. I was going to write a list, but apparently they can sneak palm oil into a lot. Mainly because palm oil is supposedly healthier for us…Humans. As the WWF site says though:

But you don’t have to give up products containing palm oil! Avoiding palm oil could have worse effects because it might take support away from companies that are trying hard to improve the situation. This could encourage companies to use other products that may have even more impact on the environment. Palm oil is by far the most efficient vegetable oil to grow as it takes less land to produce than other vegetable oils. Palm oil can be produced in a responsible manner that respects the environment and the communities where it is commonly grown.

International Tigers Days

Well, as the title suggests it is International Tigers Day.

Tiger Cub GIF by BBC America - Find & Share on GIPHY

So let’s celebrate the day with some facts about the tiger.

  • There are only roughly about 3,900 tigers left in the world.
  • Since the beginning of the 20th century we’ve lost approx 95% of the tiger population.
  • International Tigers Day created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit.
  • India counts the number of wild tigers every four years.
  • Please read more about TX2 vai this link. A conservation goal was set by the governments of the 13 tiger range countries. Too double the number of wild tigers by 2022 – the next Chinese year of the tiger.
  • Although usually solitary animals. A group of Tigers
  • There are more tigers being kept as pets, then there are in the wild.

Okay all these facts are depressing.

World Rhino Day AND Hobbit Day…What a Treat!

Today is important for two reasons:

The reciognition and information spreading of one of the worlds largest and heavily endangered animals. The Rhino…A Day which celebrates ALL five species of Rhino: Black, White, Greater One-Horned, Sumatran and Javan.

Today is also Hobbit Day…Hobbit Day is the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins (different years though, obviously) The two main characters/protagonist of the two greatest series ever written!

World Lion Day

The Kings and Queens of the African Savannah!

This celebration of the animal kingdom’s most beautiful and fearsome creature was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats. August 10th is a day for people to come together from across the world to pay tribute to the mighty lion in as many ways as possible. Though a fun and exciting occasion for all, its foundations are based in a very serious matter: lion numbers have dramatically declined to the point where the species needs to be placed on the endangered list, just like its larger cousin the tiger.

*Now please be VERY careful when you chose to donate to any cause…Especially when it comes to Wildlife. They can’t let you know if the money is even getting to them and there are LOT of people who DO take advantage of this. Please do research before donating*

Saying that…Please DO donate too:

Please DO NOT donate too:

  • BJWT
  • Kevin Richardson aka “The Lion Whisperer”

I actually used to follow both of these accounts. BJWT isn’t even a registered sanctuary, despite what “Papa Bear” may say. It’s kind of like saying I’m Beyonce, just because I say. Kevin Richardson, blamed one of his own staff for her being killed. When it wasn’t the case and the women unknowingly walked into an area where the gate had not been shut properly. It was also NOT the first time someone has been killed on one of his properties.

Beware of “rescues” and “foundations sanctuaries” that allow people (especially celebrities) to come in and handle cubs/baby animals. Sanctuaries will NEVER allow humans to handle the Cats. We give them and they give us diseases, but ours kill them. Another reason to NOT support BJWT. Constantly having cubs come in (most of the time on a weekly basis), then they get sick, then they “disappear” is not  what a Sanctuary will do. Sanctuaries will only come and “rescue” cubs IF it’s urgent.

Endangered Species Day

Probably not the best way to start the “weekend” off…but today is Endangered Species Day.

Endangered Species Coalition (Please click this link to see the different endangered animals. With more information about the “Protecting the Endangered Species Act)

It’s my own personal view that people underestimate how many endangered animals they are and the how fast they rapidly disappearing. I know that my article posted below that says “US”, but it is an epidemic around the world. With so many things happening, sometimes it may be easy to forget or to just plain not care. Apparently Australia, for some reason, have the worst reputation for not protecting their animals. Which just breaks my heart.

U.S. Americans greatly underestimate how many animals on the Endangered species list, study shows:

Protect Africa!

I’ve been trying not to write anything political at least for another month or so, but today…today…I just have to say…

Does anyone else see any irony in Trump calling other countries (especially African countries) *sh%tholes? I thought all the money from the hunting and “conservation” that these Americans hunters (ie Trumps) were going over to do, were going back to the people? They keep using it a their big thing, that it’s really helping these countries? You mean, it’s NOT happening? I don’t know whether that’s just insulting or infuriating, considering the rate these hunters and people who want animals like Rhinos. The rate that are killing off the African animals at.

Someone should probably tell Trump as well that the people of Norway don’t want to leave Norway because it’s actually a really fantastic country to live in.

World Pangolin Day

…Is actually on the 18th 2017 but I’ve only just found out about it. For future reference though World Pangolin Day is held every third Saturday in February. The reason I still wanted to post this though is because Pangolins are one of the heaviest trafficked animals on the planet. Although there are moves to stop them from being hunted, they are still trafficked.
