Thursday Theories – The Music = My Country

I want to change this post a little this week. Over this week, I was listening to some songs that make me nostalgic for how I think my country used to be, and how it should be.

Music is a different form of communication, it can make us feel so many different ways. It can invoke emotions that we sometimes forget are there. What I am going to do this week, is post five songs that make me “sappy” for my country, Australia. When I hear these songs, it reminds me that there is something beautiful still in my country.

I would LOVE for you all to either pingback five songs of your own, that represent your country to you. Doesn’t matter why. If you don’t want to do a whole post, then please post in the comments, the songs you think represent your country to you. If it’s your country’s anthem, go for it!

When I was in America, I sometimes would listen to this one song on repeat:

I mean, everyone and anyone whose anyone, thinks this should be Australia’s National Anthem:

You are very much missed Peter Allen ❤ ❤ ❤

This one, speaks a lot about what’s wrong with Australia. Especially with the treatment of Australian Aboriginal People. You can’t have the good without the bad. On a funnier side, this is the video that made a lot of men scared of Peter Garrett, because of his dancing, haha.

Seriously, is there anything better than indigenous (of any culture) music?

I am posting a link to the Radio Mix of the same song, that I think a lot of Australian’s will be more “used too” Both are fantastic though.

Do you have any IDEA how hard it is, to pick just 5 songs? lol … I do HAVE to include “the voice” though, lol

John Farnham – You’re the Voice (Official Video) Uploaded by:

Extremely honorable mentions:

Jimmy Barnes

Noiseworks

Dusty Slim

Icehouse

Sherbert

Daryl Braithwaite

Not expected mentions:

Look … I know AC/DC, Kylie Minogue, INXS, etc. Are Australian bands/singers, do they have songs that make me think “Australia”. That’s fine. This isn’t a list of what Australian bands and singers are my favourite. These are a list of songs, that make me think Australia and make me love Australia. Not sorry, but Kylie Minogue doesn’t have one, lol.

When love becomes blind

Just like human beings, it’s okay for you to love your country. There’s nothing wrong with it, most people do love their country.

It becomes a problem, just like with human beings, when you want to ignore how not “perfect” your country is. Nobody and no country is perfect. You can make pretty close to “perfect” though, if you actually encourage to fix what’s wrong.

“The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one.” You certainly can’t solve a problem by pretending there isn’t one. Nor can you find a resolution by making excuses. First you must admit there is a problem. Then you can explore what the causes are

Love it or leave it

I’m just letting you know that if you walk in and I see you with a t-shirt saying “If you don’t love it, leave it” I am probably going to instantly dislike you. As I did when a student walked in and was wearing a t-shirt with that saying, with the Australian flag all over it. I have never understood that mind set.

It is absolutely possible to love something or someone and realise they have imperfections. It is possible to love something or someone and want better for them. I love Australia, but it’s definitely (like a lot of countries lately) got flaws. If you don’t like people saying “We can do better” than you leave.

If your family, friends and/or relationships are not perfect, do you just walk away? Of course not, you help them. It’s a ridiculous notion that we all can’t improve in some way…Except for animals, they are pretty perfect!

QUESTIONS:

  • Guns?   Are you pro or con?  Explain your point of view.

Oh wow, that is a … loaded … question so to speak! In theory I have no problem with guns. There’s that saying about how it’s not guns that kill, it’s the owner…Well, duh! In Australia we are doing pretty well when it comes to gun laws. People can still own guns, they just can’t own army type weapons, that can kill multiple people within a second. I don’t know anyone personally who owns a gun in Australia, well that I’m aware of anyway, but I know that you can. Just more like rifles and shot guns.

Some people say the same gun laws we have in Australia wont work in the US because the US is bigger than Australia, more population. Which may be true, but how is doing nothing working for them? The one thing I truly don’t understand about the US, why a lot of the 2A defenders, don’t want to try something…anything? It’s such a hard thing to wrap my head around. For example, the NRA tried to block a law that people who stalk and domestically abuse others, cannot own a gun. Why? They keep saying because it’s a misdemeanour, it’s not that serious. They WANT these stalkers and abusers to keep their guns because of “rights”. Why? I am sure in their heads they’re thinking “Well I’ve got a gun, I can just shoot them”…It’s not that simple, and if they shot them dead, they’d be charged with murder. Wouldn’t it just be better and make more sense to make sure stalkers/domestic abusers can’t have guns?

  • How would your country change if everyone, regardless of age, could vote?

Well that’s a lot of a question. Does this mean, should the terrible twos be able to vote? I know that this question is talked a lot about these days, especially with the #climatestrike and #marchforourlives kids. Then on the flip side of that you have the boys from Covington Catholic, would you really want boys like that voting? But then are those boys so different from adult Trump supporters?

  • What’s your cure for hiccups?

I don’t really have one to be honest. I kind of just keep letting it go and just hope that it goes away quickly.

  • What’s the coldest you’ve ever been?

I can’t remember an actual specific time when I’ve been the coldest I’ve ever been. It’s probably been any time though that I’ve hopped into bed when it’s been Winter. It is terrible when I first get into bed, I feel like the sheets are stabbing into my body, lol

What one word describes you best?

At the moment it feels “relieved” is the first word that comes to mind. You know that feeling when you’ve been in a really bad relationship for a really long time, and then it’s over…and you just feel relieved, that’s where I am right now.

I think the general word that I would used for myself overall would be steady. No matter how good or bad things are, I never lose it with others. I try to use the same routines to keep myself together and I keep treating everyone the same.

What is set as the background on your computer?

Lion and Cub

If you have been to a foreign country name those you have been too?

I’ve just been mainly to the UK and the US of A…I have family and friends in both the countries.

What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I lost lifelong friends this week…In all honesty though, I am alright. I haven’t cried, I have been laughing a lot and I have been get a lot of stuff done and I’ve been getting out a lot! The wonderful thing everyone else has just been amazing! Everyone else in my life has been doing what those “life-long friends” SHOULD have been doing. I think that’s the reason I just feel so amazing! I almost feel guilty for not feeling more upset…Only just almost ~.^

I still call Australia home…

32. A city you’ve visited

I guess I would have to talk about Arizona in the United States of America. A few years ago I went there for a few months a time every few months….I would work my butt off in Australia for a few months and then stay in Arizona for a few months.  I was actually dating someone from Arizona and then of course, it just never seemed to work out.

I am grateful for it for a few various reasons. It was the bravest thing I had ever done. Everyone was shocked that I went over there, including myself. I never seemed the type to go over and potentially get stood up in a “foreign” country. Which actually nearly happened, because he went to the area.

Also though it made me brave for so many different reasons. I travelled by myself and I do get airsick. I had to learn to do a lot by myself. Travelling to America taught me how to really cook, rather than just heat things up. Walking around by myself, my partner at the time worked retail at Walmart and it was about 10-15 minute walk. I used to walk around and buy grocery shopping, I learnt a lot to do by myself.

Share Your World … Week 22

  1. Every country in the world has lost men and women in some kind of Armed Forces.  When does your country celebrate or morn their deaths? (Optional)
I live in the Country Down Under and we have two days here. The major one is on the 25th of April, every year. It’s called ANZAC Day, ‘ANZAC’ stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It’s celebrated on this day as on the morning of 25 April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The other is November 11th (I think that this is celebrated a lot though). 11:11am we take a one minute silence…Remembrance Day.
  1. What is your favorite holiday or holidays?
I am a Christmas girl all the way. The feeling of the season just brings out my happy side. I spend all year getting little bits here and there all year. It’s amazing what you can save when you put a little away each week/fortnight.
  2. How do you celebrate that holiday?
Another reason that I love the season is that it brings everyone out and brings the whole family together. We have a very traditional Christmas, same traditions every year. Ones that have been in our families for years.

When you go away

So I went away into the country this weekend for my Dad’s birthday, which also meant that I could not really access my phone very well (it did a lot of “roaming” over the weekend. SO my phone was mainly off and I didn’t have access to a computer, internet and WordPress.

I’ve also been really struggling with a lot of personal things (mainly job related…or lack there of of getting into the field I want too). Which means that I have really been struggling to think of ‘anything’ magical. Can I just say one thing though that is magical?

Country food is amazing! I mean it’s just different and it tastes healthy as well, even when the food seems bigger. I had these “salt-bush sausages”. They are these big thick sausages that apparently have no chemicals in them or anything like that.

The Sampson Flat BushFires

Seeing as most of my viewers come from a completely different hemisphere, I just thought that they would like to know that here in the Southern Hemisphere it’s Summer. Since I live in the driest state, in the driest country in the world it’s a recipe for bushfire.

As I am writing this here in South Australia we are experiencing one of our worse bush fires since the 1984 Ash Wednesdays, which was just as devastating. 12 homes have been confirmed as lost, 20 more are feared destroyed and an entire kennel and cattery has been burnt to the ground, and unfortunately all of the cats were killed and a large majority of the dogs too. 13 CFS (Country Fire Services) volunteers have been taken to hospital with slight burns and smoke inhalation.

At the moment Firefighters are trying to fight the fires before Wednesday when the temperature is supposed to rise again. The Australian Business Insider has got some informative articles on the fires, including a lot of pictures showing the devastation and how large the fire has gotten.

Please watch the current updates on the CFS Facebook page.
