Australia/Invasion Day

I respect and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and future. I acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on this land and commit to building a brighter future together.

The only thing I enjoy about today, I get a public holiday, which means a day off of work. Think of Australia/Invasion Day as America’s Columbus Day.

Every year, I still think it should be moved and every year, I have to explain to idiots how there are still people living from the Stolen Generations. Between 1910 and the 1970s*, many First Nations children were forcibly removed from their families as a result of various government policies.

Someone made a really good point, if we can’t #changethedate to show that we don’t celebrate the harm of our first nations people. Do we actually even deserve an #AustraliaDay? No, I don’t think we do.

*Policies of forced removals were in place from 1910 to 1969, but there are many stories of forced removals prior to and after these dates.
