This weekend (well mainly Friday) Australians will “celebrate” Australia Day. The day is now in high debate whether the date should be changed, or whether not the entire day should be changed entirely.
The problem with the date is that it significance is when the British/Europe settlers came to “discover” Australia. Then as what happened back then, they nearly ended up wiping out the Indigenous people out…Think Columbus Day. Then of course it hasn’t been until the most recent decade that the Australian Parliament has made any sort of acknowledgement, including the 70’s and 80’s “stolen generation”.
Some people want the name of the day changed to “Invasion Day”. Some don’t. Some want the day changed entirely, some don’t.
I’m more of the I want the name of the day changed and “Australia Day” to be changed to a different day instead. I don’t know why people are so obsessively holding onto a holiday, that wasn’t even made a national public holiday until 1994. Even then most people I know have barbecues and get drunk. They don’t do anything to recognise how we became Australia. It’s just having a Barbecue and getting drunk on another day instead. We literally have another 364 to choose from. I personally would want the other Australia Day to be somewhere in Summer. Mainly because I think of Australia and I think of heat, lol
